Monsters, Creatures, & Legends
Experience the spooky side of art songs. Not all art songs are pretty songs about flowers and love. Hear songs about sailors drowning, murders on the moors and haunted locales that go bump in the night. This performance includes a video presentation of Denver Art Song Project and The People’s Theatre of Denver collaboration, “The Jabberwocky.” And to end the show, experience the frivolous side of songs about the animal kingdom!
From troubadours, wanderers and hermits, hear songs that were inspired by those on the fringes of society. These songs cycles, or groups of art songs, help illuminate the stories of people who are separated from the mainstream of society. In this special show, DASP also examines the nature of cultural appropriation in art songs and classical music and experiments with a reworking of Dvorak’s “The Gypsy Songs.”
The Pillars of African American Art Songs
Denver Art Song Project’s curator, Stephanie Ann Ball, takes you through a journey of modern African-American art songs that transcend the genre. Experience the unexpected sounds of modern composers who reflect on texts and poetry. Hear the breadth of music from spirituals to modern art songs in this inspiring production.
